# How settings work

> Where settings live, when a change takes effect, and which values get corrected on save.

Settings live in Reddit's app-settings UI. Open your subreddit's apps page, find
Trade Post, press settings. They are per subreddit and moderators only.

| Group                                         | Decides                                             |
| --------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------- |
| [Listing format](/moderators/listing-format) | How titles are built, and what a lister may say |
| [Photo requirements](/moderators/photo-rules) | When photos are mandatory                           |
| [Trades](/moderators/trade-rules) | How long silence is tolerated, and what is recorded |
| [Inventory](/moderators/inventory-rules) | Who sees whose items, and when items are deleted |
| [Reputation](/moderators/flair)               | What a completed trade does to user flair           |

## When a change takes effect

<Warning>
  Wait about a minute before testing. A trader who already has the hub open keeps
  the old rules until they close and reopen it.
</Warning>

Two waits:

* **Subreddit-wide, about a minute.** In that window a trader can see the old rules
  in the composer while the server judges by the new ones. Reloading does not help;
  the wait is shared across the subreddit.
* **Per session, until the hub is reopened.** A trader with the hub already open
  keeps the rules they opened it with.

## Values corrected on save

Eight fields refuse a bad value. The other sixteen accept it and move it into
range without an error, and the settings screen keeps showing what you typed.

| Setting                                | Typed | Applied |
| -------------------------------------- | ----- | ------- |
| Days before silence counts as ghosting | 60    | 20      |
| Max items per listing                  | 500   | 100     |
| Wants shown in the title               | 50    | 20      |
| Photos per item                        | 20    | 8       |
| Delete items nobody has touched in     | 30    | 90      |
| Delete items nobody has touched in     | 1095  | 730     |
| Max items one trader may hold          | 500   | 200     |

## Fields where 0 is not zero

| Setting                            | 0 means                        |
| ---------------------------------- | ------------------------------ |
| Max items one trader may hold | No limit below the 200 ceiling |
| Delete items nobody has touched in | Keep forever |
| Delete traded items after | Follow the setting above |

<Warning>
  Keeping traded items forever requires both item windows set to 0. Setting only
  the traded window leaves traded items on the idle window, which defaults to 180
  days.
</Warning>

## Fields validated on save

Region tag format, "Have" tag, "Want" tag, Looking-for options, Condition options,
Flair for a trader with no count yet, Your subreddit's trade bot, The comment your
bot expects.

The refusal names the problem. A region format with no tokens returns *"Include at
least one token, e.g. `<COUNTRY>`, `<STATE>`…"*

<Info>
  A blank region format blocks the save. A blank bot name saves and silently
  disarms "Keep our existing bot": no flair, no comment, no error, and the confirm
  button never appears.
</Info>

## Not configurable

* A deleted Reddit account's items are always removed.
* An item stuck on a trade that no longer exists is always freed.
* A stalled trade always closes at its deadline, releases its goods, and posts the
  notice. Only whether it counts against anyone is configurable.
* Deleting a listing post always erases its record, its offers and its trades.
